Street life in Manchester had prepared her for a twenty year battle with doctors. In 1991 she became severely ill after reactions to dental anaesthetic. Strange, intensely itching sores erupted on her skin. She felt like she was dying. A blood test showed kidney failure but the doctor said there must have been a mix-up at the path lab. Strange particles oozed from the sores. Curiosity got the better of her but what she saw under the microscope was just the beginning of her nightmares. She had to find the truth, a logical explanation for this bizarre illness. Doctors shunned and publicly humiliated her. On the brink of emotional breakdown she finally found a doctor who recognised and diagnosed her illness as Ehlers-Danlos/Joint Hypermobility Syndrome. By strange coincidence, the doctor had this condition too. The battle was over; the mystery was solved… until her friend and fellow campaigner Nina Hogan came back into her life.
